Birds

Several months ago, as I came home from work, I was greeted with the sight of a huge flock of birds (starlings, maybe?) flying around in the sunset sky. It was a bit... Hitchcockian!

Sailaway

An older photo, but one I'm still fond of. Beautiful surroundings of the island-rich Finnish waters aside, I like how I managed to capture the sail boat just as it was in the middle of the sun's reflection on the water. It's very... tranquil.

Taken from the Stockholm - Turku ferry.

Big leaf

This leaf, backlit by the sun and sky, caught my attention.

Sunset over the Rockies

Sunsets are always pretty photography subjects—expect more at some time or other here at [personal profile] shadomanda. And sometimes, Mother Nature makes them extra pretty: these two birds were kind enough to do a fly-by just as I was pressing the shutter.

Backlit lantern

Another backlit shot, this one from a classic street lantern in the old part of Strasbourg.

Lighthouse

Usually, taking photos by pointing the camera toward the sun isn't the best idea. However, if you have something blocking the actual sun, it can make for some interesting effects. Like this upward photo of the Faro de Pechiguera in Playa Blanca on Lanzarote.

By silhouetting the lighthouse and having a bit of sunburst around it, I think it's a rather different photo from "usual". As is proved by this version taken from the other side with the sun in my back.

*squints* Hm, it's also very phallic, I suppose...

Waddenzee flats

Just 'cause I think it's pretty: the sun descending over the partially dry Waddenzee during low tide. Taken from the Schiermonnikoog ferry.

Spring tulips

I felt it was time for some more spring tulips....

Taken in Italy, spring of 2007, a year this spring is trying to match, weather-wise.

Cabo Verde palm tree

In celebration of summer arriving absurdly early (but who's complaining?), have a (silhouetted) palm tree.

We're not quite at the palm tree growing stage, yet, but at the current rate, that won't be much longer.

Bamboo jungle

No, this photo's not taken in an Asian jungle somewhere, but in the Giardino Botanico A. Hruska, Fondazione Andre Heller, in Gardone Riviera on the shores of Lago di Garda in Italy.

Winter view from home

Not one, but two photos today for you lucky (?) people. While most of Europe seems to get bogged down by snow, my little corner of the world is getting away relatively lightly. There's snow and ice on the ground, and freezing hard enough that the salting of roads is no longer working, but, when I woke up this morning, I was also greeted by these two views. Both were taking from the landing right outside my front door.

View of the water tower

And another one )

The pictures were taken at about a 90 degree angle from one another, but the low sun made the color of the light change dramatically.

Sunburst

Today was another of those gray, depressing winter days that make it hard to fully wake up. I do feel the need to remind myself that somewhere out there, the sun is still shining.

This is a photo of the Concordia temple in the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento, Sicily. Taken in 2002.

Palm tree at sunset

Because it is really damned cold out here (-5C,but with a windchill of -15C, which is outrageous for December 1st), I need to remind myself of places a little warmer.

Hence, a palm tree at sunset, Lanzarote, November 2009. Taken on the last day of my holiday, with all the days before having either too many clouds, or too few clouds for a decent sunset.

Sunset in Cyprus

As today is so horribly gray and dull and, well, colorless, I figured I needed to add a little warmth and color.

In 2004, I went on a hiking holiday in Cyprus. This was taken on one of the last days, during an evening hike, that we finished with wine and grapes at a local tavern.
