Gloucester cathedral
A HDR-version of a hallway in Gloucester cathedral. Fans of the Harry Potter movies might find the scene familiar....

Lighthouse
Usually, taking photos by pointing the camera toward the sun isn't the best idea. However, if you have something blocking the actual sun, it can make for some interesting effects. Like this upward photo of the Faro de Pechiguera in Playa Blanca on Lanzarote.

By silhouetting the lighthouse and having a bit of sunburst around it, I think it's a rather different photo from "usual". As is proved by this version taken from the other side with the sun in my back.

*squints* Hm, it's also very phallic, I suppose...

Bourtange
Gateway and drawbridge neatly lined up in Vesting Bourtange (where, coincidentally, they're re-enacting the Battle of Bourtange of 1640 this very weekend, so the website tells me. Appropriate picture is appropriate).

Old West
Oh, Random's really random...! But this shot would've been perfect for last week's Supernatural.
Street in Old Trail Town, Cody, Wyoming.

It's hard to get the lighting right, with the stark midday sun, and the deep shadows under the awnings. I think nowadays I'd try to make it into a HDR shot, but that was a technique I'd never even heard about back in 2004.

Magically removed visitors....
More fun with slow shutterspeeds: how to remove people from a scene? Use a very slow shutterspeed. The photo below was taken in one of the rooms at the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, an always crowded tourist site.

Exposure: 15 secs.
It's usually hard to take photos of rooms like this, and not have other sightseers block everything -- except if you're a professional, maybe, and can take photos after hours. The rest of us have to resort to magic tricks....
You do end up with some ghosting, depending on how long an exposure you use and how fast the people move, but I don't mind that at all for pictures like this. It adds a bit of life to what would otherwise be a very lifeless room.

A little piece of Russia....
Barentsburg is a Russian settlement on Svalbard, Norway. It was drizzling and gray when we visited, which quite fit the image one has of an Arctic mining town, and while the tour was a bit tl;dr, I found the architecture rather photogenic.

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse
One of Nova Scotia's busiest tourist attractions is the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove. As is clearly obvious from the picture... :-)

Stained glass window
Late 19th century, Groningen got its current main railway station building. It was restored to its old glory in 1999. This picture of one of the stained glass windows was taken a few years later.
