Zebra hunt

While on safari in Kenya & Tanzania, we accompanied a couple of lionesses on their hunt for zebra. Rest assured, the presence of cars in this stage of the hunt did not stop them for catching and eating an actual zebra.

Lion

On safari in the Serengeti, either in Kenya or Tanzania (I've forgotten which section this pic was taken in), we spotted a lion next to the road.

Park Güell

I liked the pattern these columns formed in Park Güell, Barcelona. Took some patience to capture it "people-less": it was Mayday, which is a holiday in Spain, so lots of Barcelonians were out and about as well as the tourists.

Colosseum

Back from a holiday during which I took many, many photos again. Some of those will eventually find their way to [personal profile] shadomanda, undoubtedly :)

But for now, have an oldie!

Ostrich chicks

As I wrote in my travel report back in 2002 about this photo:

"Then, something moves on the horizon. At first, to our unexperienced eyes, it looks like a thick brush with lots of sticks jutting up. Our guide, on the other hand, recognizes it as a group of ostrich chicks. Baby ostriches? How can there be so many of them!

The guide explains that each male will herd several females to a nesting hollow, where they will lay up to 30 eggs. Only one female, the major hen, will incubate the eggs along with the male.

The chicks are in a state, since their parents and caretakers are on the other side of the road and they are afraid to cross. They continue to run up and down on the plain, never breaking formation, even long after we have passed."

Pigeons

Judging by this photo, I'm not sure Barcelona doesn't have more pigeons than people in the city....

Making fire

While visiting a Maasai village in Amboseli National Park (Kenya), these men demonstrated their fire-making skills.

People watching

While on safari in Africa with my family, several years ago, I found the behavior of the people almost as interesting as the sight of wild animals. Especially when, in Ngorongoro national park, a rhino was spotted and the call went out over the radio. The result, ten minutes later?

Sunburst

Today was another of those gray, depressing winter days that make it hard to fully wake up. I do feel the need to remind myself that somewhere out there, the sun is still shining.

This is a photo of the Concordia temple in the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento, Sicily. Taken in 2002.

Over the rainbow

Sometimes, you just have to be lucky enough to find yourself in the right place at the right time. I caught this rainbow in Taormina, Sicily, just as I happened to be in a high spot overlooking the town.

Pretty chairs all in a row

A golden oldie this time: taken at the Vatican, back in 2002.

The entire St. Peter's Square was filled with row after row of empty plastic chairs, which greatly amused me.
